Dumpster Sizes and Pricing — Find the Right Dumpster for Your Project
Why Size Matters
Choosing the right dumpster size can make the difference between a smooth cleanup and an expensive overage charge. Too small, and you’ll run out of room mid-project. Too large, and you’re paying for space you don’t need.
At Dumpster Brothers, we offer a complete range from 10 to 40 yard dumpsters—the widest selection in North Metro Atlanta. Most national competitors cap out at 20 yard, which means they can’t handle the big jobs: commercial demolition, roofing tearoffs, estate cleanouts, or major renovation projects. We can.
All of our dumpsters come with flat rate pricing, a 14 day rental period, transparent dimensions, and the same day delivery if you call by 10 AM. No surprise fees, no overage charge guessing games.

10 Yard Dumpster
Best for: Small home projects, garage cleanouts, minor renovations, junk removal
The 10 yard dumpster is our most compact option. At 14 feet long and 3.5 feet tall, it fits in most residential driveways without issues. It holds approximately 3 pickup truck loads of debris.
This size works well for modest jobs: clearing out a single room, small deck removal, yard waste, or a bathroom remodel. However, it’s NOT recommended for roofing work or full-home cleanouts—you’ll run out of room quickly.
- Capacity: 3 pickup truck loads
- Weight limit: 1 ton
- Perfect for: Garage cleanouts, small remodels, minor yard work
15 Yard Dumpster
Best for: Medium home projects, kitchen remodels, partial demolition, moving debris
The 15 yard dumpster strikes a balance—bigger than the 10 yard, but easier to place than a 20. At 16 feet long with 1 ton of included weight, it’s a popular choice for homeowners tackling mid-size projects.
This size handles kitchen or bathroom remodels, fence removal, deck tearoffs, and even smaller commercial cleanouts. It gives you breathing room without being oversized.
- Capacity: 4–6 pickup truck loads
- Weight limit: 1 ton
- Perfect for: Kitchen/bathroom remodels, fence removal, mid-size demolition
20 Yard Dumpster
Best for: Roofing projects, large home renovations, estate cleanouts, major yard work
The 20 yard is the most popular size we rent. It’s large enough for serious projects but still reasonable to place in most residential settings (20 feet long, 3 feet 9 inches tall).
This is the size we recommend for roof tearoffs, full kitchen remodels, estate cleanouts, and significant demolition work. It holds approximately 8 pickup truck loads and includes 2 tons of weight.
- Capacity: 6–8 pickup truck loads
- Weight limit: 2 tons
- Perfect for: Roofing, major renovations, estate cleanouts
30 Yard Dumpster
Best for: Large commercial projects, major demolition, commercial renovations, heavy industrial work
The 30 yard is a beast. At 20 feet long and 5 feet 8 inches tall, it’s noticeably taller than the 20 yard—you’ll want to make sure utility lines are clear overhead. With 3 tons of included weight, it handles heavy materials and high volume construction waste.
This size is popular with contractors for major renovation projects, light commercial demolition, and jobs where debris weight is a concern.
- Capacity: 9–12 pickup truck loads
- Weight limit: 3 tons
- Perfect for: Large renovations, commercial demolition, major debris
40 Yard Dumpster — Our Largest Size
Best for: Major commercial demolition, large industrial projects, major construction
The 40 yard is the LARGEST roll off dumpster available in North Metro Atlanta. No other local competitor offers this size. At 20 feet long and 7 feet 4 inches tall, it’s a serious piece of equipment for serious projects.
With 4 tons of included weight capacity and roughly 16 pickup truck loads of space, the 40 yard is built for major demolition, large hotel renovations, multi-building construction cleanup, and industrial projects.
If you’re wondering whether you need this size, you probably don’t—but when you do, it’s the only size that will work.
- Capacity: 12–16 pickup truck loads
- Weight limit: 4 tons
- Perfect for: Major demolition, large commercial projects, industrial cleanup
How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size
Picking the right size is easier than you think. Answer these questions:
1. What's Your Project Type?
Small Interior Work (garage, attic, single room) → Start with 10 yard
- Examples: Garage cleanout, small bedroom renovation, attic junk removal
- Call us if unsure: (678) 787-2733
Medium Home Project (kitchen, bathroom, deck) → Start with 15 or 20 yard
- Examples: Kitchen remodel, deck removal, bathroom renovation
- 15 yard if tight on space; 20 yard if you want extra room
Roofing Project → 20 yard is the right fit; 20 yard maximum
- Roofing debris is bulky, and a 20 yard dumpster can handle a complete roof tearoff without overage
- A 20 yard is the maximum size for roofing projects; never larger than 20 yard
Estate Cleanout or Full-Home Renovation → 20 yard or larger
- Never start with a 10 or 15 yard for estate cleanouts—you’ll run out of room
- 20 or 30 yard gives you plenty of breathing room
Major Demolition or Commercial Project → 30 or 40 yard
- These sizes are built for heavy debris and high-volume projects
- If you’re unsure, call us: (678) 787-2733
2. How Much Material Do You Have?
A rough mental exercise:
- Less than 3 pickup truck loads → 10 yard
- 3 to 5 pickup truck loads → 15 yard
- 5 to 8 pickup truck loads → 20 yard
- 8 to 12 pickup truck loads → 30 yard
- 12+ pickup truck loads → 40 yard
When in doubt, go up one size. It’s cheaper to rent a slightly oversized dumpster than to pay overage charges on a too-small one.
3. What's Your Weight Load?
Different materials weigh differently. Concrete, dirt, and construction debris are HEAVY. Drywall and general household junk are LIGHT.
- Light debris (household junk, drywall, wood framing) → You can often downsize one tier
- Heavy debris (concrete, roofing, bricks, asphalt) → You may need to upsize
- Concrete only? See our concrete guidance below
Special Rule: Concrete = 20 Yard Maximum
If you’re disposing of concrete (driveways, foundations, slabs), the maximum recommended size is 20 yard. A cubic yard of concrete weighs about 1 ton. Keep concrete in its own dedicated container and never mix concrete with other debris.
Never put concrete in a 30 or larger dumpster—the weight adds up fast and will trigger overage fees.
Dumpster Size Comparison by Project Type
This table shows the suggested starting point for common projects. Every project is different. When in doubt, call us at (678) 787-2733 and we’ll help you right-size.
Project | Suggested Starting Size | Why | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Garage cleanout | 10 yard
| Small, contained space
| Call if it’s a packed garage
|
Single room renovation | 15 yard
| Medium material volume
| Kitchen/bathroom remodels fit here
|
Kitchen remodel | 20 yard
| More material than expected
| Cabinets, counters, flooring, walls add up
|
Roofing tearoff | 20 yard
| Roofing debris is bulky, 20 yard is typically right
| 20 yard is the maximum for roofing projects
|
Bathroom remodel | 15 yard
| Moderate material if just one room
| 20 yard if remodeling multiple bathrooms
|
Deck removal | 15 or 20 yard
| Wood is bulky but light; 15 works unless large deck
| Large decks need 20 yard
|
Fence removal
| 15 yard
| Wood takes up space quickly
| 20 yard if removing 200+ linear feet
|
Estate cleanout | 20 or 30 yard
| Houses have more stuff than you think
| Never start smaller than 20 yard
|
Foundation demolition | 30 yard
| Concrete is heavy; need volume for breakup debris
| Call for concrete-specific guidance
|
Commercial renovation | 30 or 40 yard
| Large volume, mixed materials
| Start with 30; upgrade if needed
|
Hotel/major demolition | 40 yard
| Largest available; multiple unit demolition
| Our 40 yard is an advantage vs. national chains
|
Key principle: You’re renting by SIZE, not by TIME. Whether you finish in 3 days or 14 days, the price is the same. You want a dumpster big enough to not run out of room.
Understanding Weight Limits and Overage
Every dumpster comes with included weight:
- 10 yard: 1 ton (2,000 lbs)
- 15 yard: 1 ton (3,000 lbs)
- 20 yard: 2 tons (4,000 lbs)
- 30 yard: 3 tons (6,000 lbs)
- 40 yard: 4 tons (8,000 lbs)
If you go over, a pro rated amount will be charged for the extra tonnage. But here’s the thing: it’s rare to hit overage on general household junk. It’s only an issue with heavy materials like concrete, dirt, or demolition debris.
Weight per material (approximate):
- Household items: 50-100 lbs per cubic yard
- Drywall: 500 lbs per cubic yard
- Wood framing: 300-400 lbs per cubic yard
- Roofing material: 800-1,200 lbs per cubic yard
- Concrete: 1,000 lbs per cubic yard (2,000 lbs per ton)
- Dirt/soil: 1,000-1,200 lbs per cubic yard
When you’re safe to downsize: If your project is mostly light debris (household junk, wood framing, drywall), you can often go one size smaller than the volume suggests.
When you should upsize: If your project includes concrete, dirt, or heavy demolition debris, consider going UP one size to avoid overage charges.
Why Dumpster Brothers for Your Size Needs

What Goes IN (Accepted Materials)
Accepted:
- Household junk and furniture
- General construction debris (wood, drywall, nails)
- Roofing material
- Demolition debris
- Yard waste (branches, brush, leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs)
- Appliances (For appliances with refrigerant, call us to discuss — we can often accommodate these items separately.)
- Concrete and asphalt (with weight limits—see below)
- Metal and scrap
- Cardboard and paper
Prohibited — NO EXCEPTIONS:
- Paint and paint cans
- Tires
- Hazardous materials (batteries, oil, chemicals, propane tanks)
- Dirt and soil
- No waste above the rim of the dumpster
Concrete Disposal: Special Guidelines
Concrete is acceptable, but weight limits apply:
- Concrete ONLY: Max 20 yard dumpster. Keep concrete in its own dedicated container. Never mix with other debris.
- Why 20 yard max? A cubic yard of concrete weighs ~1 ton. Overage charges are expensive if you exceed the included weight.
- Breaking it up: Smaller concrete chunks (6-12 inches) are easier on the equipment and your wallet.
- Reinforced concrete (rebar/wire): Acceptable; remove excess metal if possible.
Pro tip:
If you have a large concrete slab (driveway, foundation), call us at (678) 787-2733 for a free consultation. We may recommend a disposal service that specializes in concrete, or we’ll help you plan the right size + multiple hauls.
Common Questions About Dumpster Sizes
What size do I need for a roof tearoff?
A 20 yard dumpster is the right size for a complete roof tearoff on a typical residential home. Roofing material is bulky but relatively light per volume. A 20 yard is the maximum size for roofing projects — never larger than 20 yard for roofing.
If you have a very large home (4,000+ sq ft) or a complex roof, call us at (678) 787-2733 for a consultation.
Can I upgrade to a larger size mid-rental?
If you realize you need a bigger dumpster partway through your project, we can deliver a larger one. However, you’ll pay full price for the new rental—we don’t pro-rate or credit the original dumpster. It’s often cheaper to just pay overage charges or request an extension (extra days as needed; call (678) 787-2733 for pricing).
What if I finish early? Can I get a refund?
No. Our rental is by dumpster size, not days. Whether you finish in 3 days or use all 14, the price is the same. Early completion doesn’t qualify for refunds.
However, you can call us to schedule pickup once you’re done—you don’t have to wait the full 14 days.
How tall are the dumpsters? Will they fit under power lines?
Good question. Here are the heights:
- 10 yard: 3.5 feet tall
- 15 yard: 3 feet 9 inches tall
- 20 yard: 3 feet 9 inches tall
- 30 yard: 5 feet 8 inches tall ← Check overhead clearance
- 40 yard: 7 feet 4 inches tall ← High clearance required
For 30 and 40 yard, make sure power lines are at least 10 feet above ground. When we deliver, our driver will confirm clearance. If power lines are too low, we’ll work with you on placement options.
Do I need a permit for the dumpster?
Permits vary by city and county. In Alpharetta, Milton, and most North Metro Atlanta areas, residential dumpsters on your own property don’t require permits. If the dumpster is in a street or parking area, a permit may be required.
When you book, we’ll ask about placement and let you know if a permit is needed. Different cities have different rules, so call us at (678) 787-2733 if you’re unsure.
Can you deliver to an apartment complex or commercial site?
Yes. We serve both residential and commercial customers. For apartment complexes or shared properties, you may need permission from management. For commercial demolition or construction sites, we have experience with job site coordination and safety requirements.
Call (678) 787-2733 to discuss your specific location and needs.
What about driveway protection?
All dumpsters are placed carefully, but if you want extra protection for your driveway, we offer fiberglass pads as an optional upgrade for $19.99. These are NOT included in the base rental—they’re optional.
The pads protect asphalt, concrete, and pavers from the dumpster’s weight and placement. Recommended if you have a newer or pristine driveway.
Can I extend my rental past 14 days?
Yes. If you need more time, call us at (678) 787-2733 and we’ll extend your rental for as many extra days as needed. We’ll take care of it.
Do you deliver on weekends or Sundays?
Yes. We deliver 7 days a week, including Sundays. Call by 10 AM the day you need delivery, and we’ll get your dumpster to you same day if possible.
Is there a minimum rental period?
No. While our standard rental is 14 days, we can drop off and pick up on the same day or next day if your project is quick. Call (678) 787-2733 to discuss your timeline.
How much will overage charges cost?
Overage is charged as a pro rated amount if you exceed the included tonnage. We don’t publish a flat per-ton rate because it varies by material weight and market conditions. When you book, we’ll discuss estimated overage risk based on your project type. The best way to avoid overage is to choose the right size from the start.
Call (678) 787-2733 if you’re concerned about overage risk on your specific project.
What sizes do other companies offer?
Most local competitors offer 10, 15, 20 yard only. National chains like Waste Management and Republic Services offer similar ranges but without transparent pricing or same day local delivery.
Dumpster Brothers offers 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 yard—the LARGEST dumpster in the area. This is a huge advantage if you have a major demolition or commercial project.
Can I rent multiple sizes at once?
Yes. If your project requires multiple dumpsters (different material types, phased demolition, etc.), call us at (678) 787-2733 to coordinate logistics and pricing.
